"Litvaks from the perspective of Lithuanian centenary" at Užupis

On September 22, 2017 a seminar "Litvaks from the perspective of Lithuanian centenary" was provided at the Užupis gymnasium in Vilnius by the historian, WJC Yiddish Center representative Vytautas Toleikis. This event was dedicated to the commemoration day of the Holocaust in Lithuania, marked on the 23th of September.

These lectures have been provided upon the request of the deputy director of the gymnasium Virginija Mackonienė, who attended the seminar "Pearls of Yiddish Culture" in Vilnius for principals of Lithuanian schools last year. Therefore, she was aware in person about high quality and level of lectures, lecturers and seminars, which are organized by WJC YC.

The event was intended for higher classes pupils in order to convey them basic knowledge about Litvaks, Yiddish culture and heritage their life in shtetls, their relationship with their compatriots and their domestic culture.

Toleikis explained what the term "Litvaks" means, mentioned famous Litvaks: Bob Dylan, Michel Hazanavicius, Jerom David Salinger, Yosif Brodski, Yascha Heifetz and others.

About 55 children and teachers of history attended the lecture. The head of the gymnasium expressed her wish to continue familiarizing the children with Jewish history and Yiddish culture since that is still a large gap in their knowledge.
