On September 5, 2017, a seminar "Pearls of Yiddish Culture" for Lithuanian teachers and educators was held in Vilnius. It was organized jointly by the World Jewish Congress Yiddish Center and the International Commission for evaluating the crimes of Nazi and Soviet regimes in Lithuania.
WJC Executive Vice President Robert Singer, WJC Chief Program Officer Sonia Gomez de Mesquita, and assistant to WJC Chief Program Officer Itai Hacham visited the event.
At the beginning the goals of the seminar were declared, its main purpose being familiarizing inhabitants of Lithuania with culture heritage of their Jewish compatriots before World War II, filling gaps in their knowledge about disastrous fate of the Jewish people during the Holocaust.
The seminar comprised two parts. The first one was Dr. Mordechay Yushkovsky's lecture "Yiddish culture as heritage of Jewish collective memory (main aspects of Yiddish culture)".
This time the WJC YC Academic Director lectured in two languages: Russian and Hebrew, since some guests from Israel, who don't understand Russian, were present. The audience listened very attentively, however sometimes interrupting the lecturer with inquiries, laughter and notes to the point.
The second part of the seminar was a lecture-concert, featuring the local group "Klezmer Klangen", whose performance was accompanied by the about Yiddish songs told by Dr. Yushkovsky. This item was accepted very lively with cheers and loud applause. The audience joined the performers' dancing on the stage.
About 30 people attended the seminar. After the event, participants pointed out that such educative seminars should take place on a regular basis.
