On May 31, the course of Yiddish language, which lasted for 3.5 months and comprised 32 academic hours, has been completed. It was the joint project of the World Jewish Congress Yiddish Centre, Vilnius University and Vilnius Public Jewish Library.

All 23 students, who started the course, successfully finished it. The lessons were provided by the Ph.D. Eglė Bendikaitė, lecturer at Vilnius University.

The goal of the course was to teach native Lithuanians basic Yiddish. The classes focused on key language skills and incorporated grammatical structures, colloquial expressions, exercises, simple texts, dialogues, proverbs, songs, audio materials and appropriate vocabulary, which will serve as the background for further studies in that field.

Modern teaching methods, featuring computer techniques and multi-media were widely implemented.

After completing the course and passing the exam, the students have been granted academic credits to be recognized by any higher education institution.

On June 8, a small closing party with a short official introduction was held in the Jewish library. The WJC YC representative, the library's director Žilvinas Beliauskas (who also took this course) and the lecturer addressed the group, after which diplomas had been handed to all the students.

The majority of the participants expressed their wish to continue Yiddish studies at a higher level during the next academic year, too. We are planning to fulfill their wish.
