Seminar in Kharkiv for lyceum students and their tutors

On January 23 – 25, 2017 a seminar "Pearls of Yiddish Culture" took place in the "Sha'alvim" lyceum in Kharkiv, Ukraine. It differed from many other ones, bearing the same name.

The point is that this time the audience was divided in two parts: high school students and their teachers. Every subject, included in the agenda, has been discussed separately in each group, taking into account the specifics of their perception.

It should be mentioned that "Sha'alvim" is the first secondary educational institution in Ukraine where, alongside with the ordinary components of the standard curriculum, such subjects as Jewish literature, history and tradition are taught. The event was opened by the lyceum director, Professor Yevgeny Persky.

About 40 people attended the lectures of the academic director of International Yiddish Center at the World Jewish Congress, Dr. Mordechay Yushkovsky: "Three classics of Yiddish literature - Sholem Aleichem, Mendele Moicher Sforim and Yitskhok Leybush Peretz: similarities and differences in their work"; "The secrets of Jewish humor: why we laugh not over WHAT is said, but over HOW it is said?"; "Literature of Jewish emigration". The last topic, being rather complicated, was only intended for teachers.

The event is such a success that WJC has been requested to arrange another seminar in June as a logical continuation of the above-mentioned one.
