On December 9, 2018 our representative Tetyana Batanova provided a lecture about Yiddish language, literature and history at the "Days of Jewish Culture" during the holiday of Hanukkah in Odessa, Ukraine.

T. Batanova teaches Yiddish at the National University of "Kyiv-Mohyla Academy" and junior scientific officer at Judaica department of Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine.

The event was organized by the International Yiddish Center of the World Jewish Congress together with Odessa Jewish community center "Beit Grand" in order to provide the community members, its staff and broader local audience (students, university lecturers, teachers and librarians) with knowledge in Yiddish culture, literature and linguistics.

Tetyana's lecture was named "Hanukkah: what it means in Yiddish literature, folklore and local traditions". The lecture was based on examples of Yiddish classical literature, such as Mendele's Yiddish story "Vos heyst Khanike?" (What Hanukkah Means?), Sholem-Aleykhem's "Khanike-gelt", excerpts about Hanukkah traditions from Avrom-Simkhe Zaks' "Khoreve veltn", as well as on poetry and songs, such as "Oy, ir kleyne likhtelekh" by Morris Rosenfeld and "Drey zikh dreydele" by Moyshe Oysher. About 30 people attended it.
