On June 4-6, 2018 a seminar "Pearls of Yiddish culture" was held by the International Yiddish Center at the World Jewish Congress for researches, teachers and students of the National Black Sea University named after Petro Mohyla, situated in Mykolaiv (Nikolayev, South Ukraine).

Three WJC YC representatives: Professor Nikolay Zerkal of Mykolaiv National University named after Victor Sukhomlinsky, Tetyana Batanova (teacher of Yiddish at the Jewish programs at the National University "Kyiv-Mohyla Academy" and junior scientific officer at Judaica department of V. Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine), and Victor Pogromsky provided the lectures.

Batanova's talks were dedicated to the following topics: "Yiddish - Zhargon or Mame-loshn/Mother Tongue: Introduction to the History", "Yiddish in Ukraine in 1917-1919: from a Zhargon to the Official Language of State, Politics, Education and Culture" and "Ukrainian-Jewish Relations in 19th-20th Centuries in the Light of Poetry: Yiddish Poets and Their Ukrainian Translators".

The audience comprised about 30 people: faculty members, postgraduates, students, school teachers as well as community activists.

The goal of the seminar was to draw attention to Jewish studies, first and foremost to Yiddish culture, considering Yiddish literary sources in the context of studying the history of everyday life in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
