On March 22-23, 2018 a seminar "Walking round Jewish Odessa and learning Yiddish culture" was held by Israeli travel agency "Lion Tours". About 60 retired teachers from Israel took part in it.
The event comprised four lectures on diverse aspects of Yiddish culture in Odessa (provided by WJC Yiddish Center academic director, Dr, Mordechay Yushkovsky), as well as walking tours in Jewish Odessa and a lecture-concert.
The tours were aimed to familiarize the guests with the most prominent places of Jewish life in Odessa.
History of that city is tightly connected with Jewish culture and heritage. Such personalities as Mendele Moicher Sforim, Sholom Aleichem, Hayim Nachman Bialik, Ze'ev Jabotinsky, Simon Dubnov and many others, lived and worked there.
The lecture-concert "Yiddish songs – songs of Jewish soul turned out to be the most entertaining part of the program. The singer Marina Yakubovich from Israel and the pianist player Lev Sandiuk from Moscow provided its musical content, accompanied by Dr. Yushkovsky's literary and historic comments.
