Yiddish seminar for teachers of Sumy region, Ukraine

On June 11-13, 2018 two representatives of the International Yiddish Center at the World Jewish Congress: its academic director, Dr. Mordechay Yushkovsky, and Dr. Viktor Pogromsky from the National Black Sea University named after Petro Mohyla, situated in Mykolaiv (southern Ukraine) provided a seminar "Pearls of Yiddish culture" for Ukrainian teachers, involved in Jewish education.

The event, initiated by professor Yuri Nikitin – head of the regional Institute for Advanced Teacher Training, who himself participated in a Yiddish seminar for Ukrainian teachers in Vilnius in 2017, took place in the town of Sumy (north-eastern Ukraine)

About 30 educators came to listen to the lectures of the professionals on Yiddish language, literature and cultural heritage.

The aim of the seminar was to draw attention of the educators to history and heritage of Yiddish culture for prospective use of acquired knowledge and recourses of Yiddish in their practical work at contemporary secondary Jewish schools in Ukraine.

The issues of Jewish emigration from the territories of Tsarist Russia, Austria-Hungary at the end of the ХІХ century and beginning of the XX century have been featured, highlighting Yiddish culture and its role in Ukraine.

Both lecturers visited the local Jewish community house to discuss the outlooks of future cooperation.
