Seminar on feminism in Yiddish literature

On May 22, 2018 the academic director of the International Yiddish Center at the World Jewish Congress, Dr. Mordechay Yushkovsky provided a one-day seminar at the women club "Israelit de Lita", located in the Jewish community center in Vilnius.

Twenty ladies attended the event. Selected masterpieces of Mendele Moycher-Sforim, Yitzchok-Leybush Peretz, Sholem Ash, Haim Grade and other prominent Yiddish writers and poets were studied and discussed.

Upon the audience's request, one of the lectures dealt with the image of a woman in Yiddish literature and folklore, to female writers who created in Yiddish, to manifestations of feminism in traditional Jewish society, and to Jewish women's struggle for civil rights and emancipation.

The listeners expressed their great desire to participate in our further activities.
