On April 20, 2019 in St. Petersburg, Russia, the academic director of the International Yiddish Center at the World Jewish Congress, Dr. Mordechai Yushkovsky spoke about the customs of celebrating the Passover (in Hebrew – Pesakh, in Yiddish - Peysekh).

He also conducted held the Second Seder (in Yiddish - Seyder) at the invitation of the local Jewish community center "Yesod" (Basis).

The second Seder in this JCC is annually dedicated to a specific topic; this year the Yiddish culture was chosen as the focus. Dr. Yushkovsky interlaced with the reading of the Passover Haggadah, commentaries to it and rich Yiddish literature & folklore devoted to this topic: short stories, poems, jokes.

Not only did many local families listen to the story of the exodus of the Jewish people from Egypt, not only did they enjoy gourmet treats, but also heard the "Passover" lines from the books of Sholem Aleichem, Peretz, Frug, Ye'ushzon (Yustman), Heller, Vendrov, Steinbarg and other Yiddish authors.

Thus for St. Petersburg Jews, this Passover was filled with an additional component — the culture in a language that many of them heard in childhood, which caused strong emotions and nostalgia.
