Seminar in Vilnius with the Israeli teachers' association

Show israeli teachers

As usual, the seminar schedule was intense. It was opened by the lecture of the academical director of the Yiddish Center at the World Jewish Congress, Dr. Mordehay Yushkovsky "What has Yiddish to say in the 21st century?"

After a coffee break Dr. Kobi Weitzner, who came to the seminar from Warsaw, Poland for the first time (he currently works as the editor in "Dos Yiddishe Vort", as a reporter for "Yiddish forward", as a literary director in the Jewish theater in Warsaw, and a lecturer in Yiddish literature and theater in Warsaw university) gave a talk "In Yiddish it sounds better – between spoken Yiddish and literary language".

On the second day Dr. Yushkovsky delivered a lecture "Sholem Aleychem – the perfect classic", after which the participants went on a tour around Jewish Vilnius together with a local guide Nikita Meytin. During the tour they got acquainted with history of Lithuanian Jews. They returned to class just after lunch, to hear the lecture "From text to the stage - chapters from history of Yiddish theater" presented by Dr. Weitzner. The day ended with a lecture-concert "Yiddish songs of our heart" by Michail Filippov.

The third day was started by Dr. Yushkovsky and Pnina Meller speaking about pedagogical aspects in Yiddish culture teaching. Then Dr. Weitzner presented a quite unusual lecture "Jewish demon - character lines. Demonology in Yiddish literature".

Then P. Meller held a didactic workshop. Representing the Israeli National Authority for Yiddish Culture, she informed the participants that the authority will provide grants to those who launch projects of teaching Yiddish language and culture in their schools.

We are happy to be hosting such big groups, since the more people see and hear of us, the better chance our Yiddish culture gets to be spread around.
