Lecture-concert "Songs in Vilnius Ghetto during the Holocaust"

Show audience

A lecture-concert "Yiddish Songs and Poetry in Vilnius Ghetto during the Holocaust" took place in the Vilnius Public Jewish Library on September the 21st, 2016. Organized by the International Yiddish center at the World Jewish Congress in cooperation with the Vilnius Public Jewish Library, it was dedicated to the 75th anniversary of liquidation of Vilnius ghetto.

This event was intended not only for Jews, but for the wide audience, which included teachers of secondary and high schools. At the beginning the library director Žilvinas Beliauskas greeted the audience, speaking about importance of memory of the Holocaust and of making Lithuanians be aware of the tragedy, which happened in their motherland.

The main presenter was the academical director of the WJC Yiddish Center Dr. Mordehay Yushkovsky. Songs performed by the actress and singer Maryna Yakubovych from Israel and the leader of Moscow ensemble "Klezmasters" Lev Sandiuk (keyboard) colorfully illustrated the lecture.

According to the lecturer, this subject is inexhaustible. The songs are full of dismay and anxiety, nevertheless they are about life, full of appeals to Lord. It is hard to realize how people facing the tragedy were eager to create and were able to compose beautiful songs, write lyrics full of deep meaning.
