The Yiddish seminar for 30 members of the association "Dorot ha-hemshekh" (the second generation of Holocaust survivors from Israel) took place on September 11-13, 2016 in Lviv, Ukraine.
The group was gathered by the travel agency "The Lion Travel", managed by Angela Mindel.
All the participants are involved in activities of immortalization of the Holocaust and its victims. They visit secondary schools and other educational institutions in order to tell the audience about the Holocaust and its survivors.
Their above-mentioned visit to Lviv was devoted to the 75th anniversary of the tragedy in Babi Yar. In the framework of their trip, a three-days seminar about the pearls of Yiddish culture was held.
The Academical Director of the Yiddish Center at the World Jewish Congress, Dr. Mordechay Yushkovsky gave 6 lectures:
1. "Mutual influence of Yiddish and Ukrainian culture";
2. "The three classics of Yiddish literature. Similarities and differences in their works";
3. "The emigration literature in Yiddish";
4. "The poetry and songs of the Holocaust";
5. "Conflicts and dilemmas in Jewish families in the light of Yiddish literature";
6. "The secrets of Yiddish humour".
The whole course was designed in such a way that the participants could use its materials in their future work with students. The main idea of the seminar was immortalization of not only the Holocaust victims but also their Yiddish culture: language, literature, folklore, music, humour, etc.
