On March 15-18, 2018 the seminar "Pearls of Yiddish culture" for teachers of Jewish schools in Odessa, Ukraine was held there by the International Yiddish Center at the World Jewish Congress.
Two WJC JC high-ranked representatives, well-known experts in Jewish studies: Prof. Wolf Moskovich, and Dr. Mordechay Yushkovsky provided the lectures in Odessa.
Wolf Moskovich (in the photo) is Professor Emeritus, formerly professor and chairperson of the Department of Russian and Slavic Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He provided two lectures: "Yiddish language and culture in the XXI century: present and future" and "From the Yiddish folklore treasury: oaths, maledictions, benedictions".
Dr. Yushkovsky covered the following subjects: "Yiddish culture as a treasury of our collective national memory", "Holocaust literature in Yiddish" and "Odessa in Yiddish literature and folklore".
About 30 teachers, engaged in various Jewish schools of Odessa, enhanced their knowledge about the richest cultural heritage created in the Yiddish language, in order to further use that information in their pedagogical activities.
The organizers are confident that that event will be one of the important steps in reviving the Yiddish language and culture in Ukraine.
